D-town

Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus
   —The city of Detroit motto

Spirit of Detroit Statue

Detroit. Mo-town. The Motor City. The 313.

I'd love to say Detroit's my hometown, but it's not. I was actually born and raised in Warren, Michigan. But you have no idea where that is. So when I say Detroit, you know. You probably have ideas about what that means, even if you've never been here. We have the auto industry, Eminem, the Great Lakes...and, yeah, crime and controversy. That, too.

Someone once told me that Detroit was its own little bubble, a place unlike any other. I'd have to agree with that assessment, but it wasn't until my twenties that I really had the chance to explore Detroit and learn about it. Though my true hometown, Warren, shares a border with Detroit, the big city seemed far away from my comfortable suburban life and 'visiting' Detroit would've raised incredulous eyebrows from my parents. Even right next door, Detroit was the dangerous crowd you didn't let your kid hang out with.

Detroit is the perfect setting for my urban fantasy series. Of course, there is the chance I may be biased, but I don't think so. In Detroit, there is conflict. There is passion. There is history. And so much more.

Follow the links below to get acquainted with some of the greatness that is the 'D.'

Detroit is a mecca for car lovers. We host the biggest cruise of the world, the Woodward Dream Cruise. It's so large it doesn't come close to stopping in Detroit. If you want to see a selection of the most beautiful, unusual, and fastest cars, the dream cruise is the place to be.

Detroit is known as a music hub, too. Motown music was born here. Also, we host some awesome musical festivals annually. Detroit Jazz Festival and Movement Electronic Musical Festival are two of the biggest.

Look, I know Detroit has its problems. Everyone knows it. The difference with Detroit is the heart, the determination, and the pure resolve of its people to revive the city. My husband and I took part in Life Remodeled in 2013 and plan to again in the future. Talk about change? Find the change coming here.

Let's not forget the incredible architecture. Check out 'Lost Detroit' for the stories behind some of the most iconic buildings in Detroit that have fallen into ruin.

But it's not all in ruin. Far from it. If you're visiting the city and really want to get on a first name basis with her, check out Feet on the Street Tours.

Oh, and I'm not a sports girl, but I hear we have some pretty nifty teams, too.
